Hawthorn is a flowering shrub or tree in the rose family that is native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It has many uses, including as a hedgerow plant, a symbol of fertility, and a medicinal herb: 
  • Appearance
    Hawthorn trees can grow up to 15 meters tall and have pale green leaves with toothed lobes that turn yellow in the fall. The flowers are white or pink, five-petaled, and grow in clusters. The fruit is a deep-red berry called a haw. 
  • Uses
    Hawthorn has been used to treat heart disease, digestive problems, kidney problems, anxiety, and high or low blood pressure. It can also be used to maintain cardiovascular health and healthy blood pressure levels. 
  • Side effects
    Hawthorn can cause side effects such as dizziness, nausea, and digestive symptoms. It may also interact with drugs, including some heart medications. 
  • Growing conditions
    Hawthorns can grow in most soil types, in sun or light shade, and are tolerant of exposed sites and urban pollution.
